Known, not new

Chain restaurants run on corporate standards: the same menu, the same recipes, the same booths from one state to the next. The food may not beat the best local spot in town, and it doesn't need to. You know what you're going to get before you walk in.

That predictability is worth something. You don't have to research, compare reviews, decode a menu or gamble on a meal. You're not trying to explore or be ambitious tonight, and you don't have to feel like you should be.

Who it's for

Three kinds of people, and each one matters just as much.

Staying a while

You're somewhere new for more than a few days. Every meal doesn't have to be an experience. One easy, familiar dinner lets you reset from all the new input, so the next adventure still feels exciting instead of exhausting.

Passing through

You or your family are one night into a long drive. It's late, everyone's tired and hungry, and nobody wants to risk it. You need a place that's open, fits the whole car, and serves food you can count on.

Comfort, anywhere

Maybe you like what you like. Maybe new foods are hard, like with ARFID or sensory sensitivities. Maybe a certain booth takes you back. A menu you already know is a calm, comfortable choice, and there's nothing to explain.

What shows up, and what doesn't

The Usual only searches a hand-picked list of chain restaurants, sorted into four kinds, whatever the cuisine:

Casual

Chili's, Applebee's, Olive Garden, Outback, Red Lobster, Texas Roadhouse

Family

Denny's, IHOP, Cracker Barrel, Bob Evans, Waffle House

Polished

The Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang's, Yard House, Maggiano's

Novelty

Dave & Buster's, Benihana, Rainforest Cafe, Topgolf, Hooters

You won't see independent restaurants, local bars, fast food counters or fine dining. That isn't a judgment on them. Great local food is part of what makes a trip memorable, and The Usual is here for the nights in between.

How it works

Free, no account. Nothing to sign up for.

Your location stays with you. It's used in your browser to measure distance and is never stored or sent to us.

Updated weekly from each chain's own store locator, through the open All The Places project, with gaps filled from OpenStreetMap.

Open now uses the hours each chain publishes. Many chains don't publish hours, so those places stay on the map as faded dots instead of disappearing. Hours can differ, especially on holidays, so check Google Maps or call ahead to be sure.

Favorites stay on your device. Star the chains you like and they're one tap away next time. For privacy they're never sent anywhere, so they won't carry over to another phone or browser, and some browsers clear them after 7 days without a visit.
